About the Novel

It is 1587. The height of English ambition and confidence. Jane Jones boards a ship for the New World as the young daughter of the colony's surgeon, a woman whose hands know medicine and whose eyes see more than most people find comfortable. She leaves with her father's instruments and more curiosity than the voyage can safely hold. What she finds is a continent that has already been named, already been lived in, already been bled over... and a colony straining to convince itself otherwise.

When the settlement fractures, Jane becomes a witness in the margins. She loses belonging, then trust, then the very identity England assigned her. What the land demands is not endurance but reckoning, a confrontation with every certainty her homeland stitched into her, every assumption she carried across the water without knowing she held it. What emerges, slowly, is someone England has no claim on.

Tidewrack is a novel about one of the most enduring mysteries in human history. The vanishing of a community of people who believed in the promise of progress and safety... told through the eyes of the one among them who saw more than was intended.

The first english colony lands at roanoke

July 22

On July 22, 1587, the first English civilian colony, bound for the Chesapeake area, are suddenly forced ashore on the island of Roanoke that would swallow them whole. Four hundred and thirty-nine years later, Tidewrack gives voice to one of the people history forgot to name.

The Author

DG Brashears

The author has spent twenty-five years living with the question of what happened to the people of Roanoke. Not the political questions of who ordered what or who failed whom, but the human ones. What did it feel like to step onto an unknown shore with only questions, fear, and doubt, and try to build something that could last?

He is not a historian. He is a reader who became obsessed, and a writer who needed to find the person history forgot to name.

Brashears is the founder of Brazier House™ and the author of Tidewrack. He lives with an anxious interior life, a profound concern for the condition of mankind, and a hope so stubborn it has outlasted every reasonable argument against it. He writes for the people who have never quite felt at home in the world they were handed. His people. The ones who live mostly in their own minds. Who see the second shape of things. Who are looking for stories that take their interior life seriously enough to trust it.

Tidewrack is his debut novel. It was completed on July 22 — the same date the Roanoke colony first made landfall in 1587, and the birthday of his youngest daughter, Daisy. She is his flower, his unexpected journey, and the reason he believes that stepping onto a strange new shore with only questions is not a tragedy. It is a beginning.

Brazier House™ is an independent press built for readers who are still becoming — people who want stories that take their interior life seriously, challenge their assumptions with care, and leave them more themselves than they were before they started reading.
